High School Biology Co-Op

 

Using Berean Builders’ Discovering Design with Biology as the text, this college-preparatory, laboratory-based biology course offers high school students a rigorous introduction to the general study of biology.  This class will focus on performing the labs and experiments only for Biology. Materials will be provided for each student to have their own setup for each lab/experiment.  The coursework and tests are to be completed at home, at the parents’ discretion. The class will be organized by Rachel Basta and Ashley Archuletta, and we will have a sign-up sheet for parent instructors at Open House.

 

Requirements: Discovering Design with Biology Textbook. A few are available in the HERC library.

Cost: To be determined based on cost of dissection kits and additional lab materials required.  $40 HERC fee required.

Beginning Quilting Course (semester only) 2 semesters offered (see description)

COURSE #1

Beginning Quilting (1 Semester Class)

In this Beginning Quilting Class, I will introduce you to the fundamental skills and techniques of machine piecing and quilting, including sewing machine basics, fabric basics, accurate fabric cutting, machine piecing, machine quilting, and binding.  We will be making the Moda Love Charm Quilt from start to finish.   This class is ideal for ages 10 and up, though younger students are welcome with parental supervision.  We will be using sharp cutting tools and hot irons.  There will be basic sewing supplies to borrow for the class, but if you have a sewing machine to bring, please do! 

Supplies for finished Quilt Size 41”x41”

1 Charm Pack (5” squares) *OR*  3 fabrics, ⅓ yard each (All fabrics are Quilting Cottons unless otherwise noted)

¾ yard background fabric

⅝ yard border fabric (Background and border can be the same fabric = 1 ⅜ yard

½ yard binding fabric

1 ⅜ yard backing fabric (Quilting Cotton, “Minky,” or “Cuddle” Fabric)

1 ⅜ yard cotton batting

COURSE #2

Scrappy Applique Beginning Quilting Class (1 Semester Class)

 

This class will introduce you to the Scrappy Applique technique.  Learn how to use fabric scraps to create beautiful collage applique designs. The project for this class will be a wall hanging with either your name or word of your choice, or a simple shape such as a heart. The technique is fun and very easy to learn. This class is ideal for ages 10 and up, though younger students are welcome with parental supervision.  We will be using sharp cutting tools and hot irons.  There will be basic sewing supplies to borrow for the class, but if you have a sewing machine to bring, please do! 

Supplies 

Assorted fabric scraps (All fabrics are Quilting Cottons)

½ yard background fabric (Opposite color from scraps, white or light colored if scraps are dark for instance)

¼ yard binding fabric

½ yard backing fabric

½ yard cotton batting
