Elementary Reading Comprehension
Class Description:
In this enrichment class, students will be encouraged to develop a love for reading, both in private and public settings, through reading aloud in class, vocabulary work, and comprehension exercises. While the class will be centered on increasing students articulation and ease in oral reading, this class is also designed to encourage students to grow in personal reading skills as well. Literary proficiency will be enhanced through vocabulary worksheets, using words found in the selected texts, as well as comprehension exercises ensuring that students are able to grasp and apply what is being read. These goals will be facilitated through the reading of several books throughout the semester. Students will be expected to possess basic reading skills, however this class is designed to benefit readers of varying proficiencies.
There will be an additional book fee of $60 to cover material costs.

English 10 Elements of Literature College Prep
Elements of Literature (Eng. 10 College Prep) (gr. 10-12) - full year - Carla Muller This course will lead students through a study of the “elements” of literature--imaginative comparisons, allusions, symbolism, irony, and devices of sound-- by studying primarily American and British authors. These studies will focus on five genres-- biography, fiction, lyric poetry, drama and the personal essay. There is also a special unit on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. The students will learn the importance of literary analysis by studying these pieces and interpreting them in the light of Biblical Truth. The class format will include lecture, discussion and reading, as well as audio/visual teaching aids. A year-long syllabus will be sent home to ensure communication between parent/teacher, student and tutor. Curriculum required: 1.) General Science
Apologia: General Science This is a true General Science course covering a variety of branches of science including astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, earth study, geology, paleontology, and environmental science modules giving students a solid foundation in that broad field of study. This course is designed to help middle schoolers transition from elementary science to the middle school world.
This class is ideal for grades 7th-9th but I am open to other grades on a case-by-case basis. Curriculum purchased by parents is required.

Government (College Prep)
American Government fulfills the first part of the 12th grade history core curriculum. The class will consist of lectures, Q&A sessions, current events, projects and case studies. We will approach local, state and federal government from a biblical perspective. There is much discussion and the class is highly interactive and will stir the Christian student to pray for their current government, and support its biblical beginnings and future. During this Enrichment Class, your student will write a variety of styles of poetry, a
narrative, persuasive, & opinion essays; an advertisement; a short story, and a research
paper.
The class format will be a combination of lecture, discussion, and a lot of writing. We will
address grammar during class time also.
There WILL be homework assigned weekly.
Ms. Affleck will send out a supply list 2 weeks before class.
