HERC Testing Options 2010-2011

Stanford 10 Achievement Test (SAT-10) with

Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) – April 4, 6, & 8, 2011

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)

with Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) – June 6-8, 2011

Test Prep Materials (for use at home)

Home Educators’ Resource Center (HERC) will be offering these tests to homeschoolers in grades 3-10. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is administered in large groups, and each section of the test is timed. ITBS results should be in by August. The SAT-10 (Christian school edition) is administered in grade-specific groups, and the sections are not timed. A feature of this test is the Bible subtest, which comes with a detailed assessment upon scoring. Results for this test should be here by the end of the school year in June.

In addition to standard achievement testing, each test can also include an abilities test, for the benefit of parents who wish to compare their child’s abilities to his performance. THESE ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The SAT-10 has the Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT) and the ITBS has the Cognitive Abilities Test (Cog/AT). They assess thinking/reasoning skills in distinct areas, helping parents assess learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. When given in conjunction with the achievement tests, they provide a comparison of individual ability with actual school achievement. This is valuable for all students, particularly for those with unconventional learning styles. Thinking skills are vital for advanced coursework, and students who test low in this area can be remediated if the problems are assessed in time.

Times: Dates are approximate. Testing usually only takes portions of 2-4 days, depending on tests chosen and ages of  students. Final dates, times and locations will be mailed to you with confirmation.
